Lester Henry Carl, son of Albert and Bertha (Grimm) Genzen, was born April 11, 1910, in Haverhill, Iowa. He grew up in the Manning area attending rural schools and then graduating from Manning High School in 1928. After completing his schooling, he worked with his father on the family farm.

On October 25, 1933, Lester was united in marriage with Irene A.E. Meggers. Five children were born to this union. In 1934 they started renting ground and farming for themselves. Lester had a shop on his farm and did welding for all the neighbors, keeping their machinery running. While they were able, Lester and Irene enjoyed dancing and bowling. They retired and moved into Manning in 1982. In the fall of 1997 they moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. Irene died on January 11, 1998, following a lengthy illness.

Lester was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and served the church as elder, trustee and usher. For many years he was a corn dealer in Crawford County, a member of the ASC and a director of the local coop.

Lester died early Saturday morning, April 1, 2000, at the Manning Plaza at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 21 days.

Besides his wife and parents, Lester is preceded in death by a granddaughter Robin Koepke; a son-in-law Virgil Denker; and three brothers: Arthur Genzen; Elmer Genzen and Robert Genzen.

He is survived by his children: Phyllis and her husband Robert Hagge of Westside; Daryl Genzen and his wife Diane of Manning; Joycelyn and her husband Roger Koepke of St. Louis, MO; Beverly and her husband Larry Beckman of Odebolt; and Royce Genzen and his wife Nancy of Montclair CA; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Virgil Genzen and his wife Florence of Manning and Ivan Genzen and his wife Irene of Manilla; three sisters: Odessa and her husband Delbert Vinke of Manning; Lavonne and her husband Louie Gehlsen of Manning; and Lucille and her husband Kenneth Pfannkuch of Manning; sister-in-law Donna Genzen of Bloomington, IL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
