Lily Edna, daughter of Henry and Rosa Evaline (Hass) Paulsen, was born September 24, 1921, in Viola Township in Audubon County, Iowa. She grew up in Viola Township until 13 years of age when the family moved to a farm nine miles south of Manning. She attended rural schools until she completed the 8th grade. Lily stayed on the farm after her schooling doing housework and later worked in a drug store.

On September 30, 1949, Lily was united in marriage with Robert Gene Goddard in Carroll. The couple made their home in Fiscus for a short time, then lived in Davenport from 1949 to 1954. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Lily was a housewife until they divorced in 1959. She moved to Coon Rapids where she worked as a bookkeeper for the Gambles Store until the mid-1960s when she worked for Dr. Johnson. In the late 1960s she moved to St. Mary, Missouri, to work in a Veterans home operated by her brother Alvin. In the early 1970s she returned to Manning, Iowa, and worked 13 years as a waitress for Saunders Steak House. She also worked at Deb's Corner Café from 1984 until her retirement.

In 1991 Lily moved to Coon Rapids to be near her son and family. In her spare time Lily enjoyed reading, raising flowers, sewing, word puzzles, watching TV. She also looked forward to playing SkipBo, daily games of rummy with Marty and keeping track of her grandsons' travels. Lily was a member of the Methodist Church in Manning and Coon Rapids. She was also a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.

Lily moved to the Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids in 2009. She died there on Sunday, October 11, 2015, at the age of 94 years and 17 days.

Besides her parents, Lily was preceded in death by her seven brothers: twin infant brothers Max and Mark Paulsen; Marvin Paulsen (Ethel); Herman Paulsen (Evelyn); Henry Paulsen; Lester Paulsen in infancy; and Alvin Paulsen (Bessie).
