Lola Marie Ahrendsen

Lola Marie, daughter of Henry J. M. and Alta (Wiese) Hansen, was born November 18, 1924, northeast of Manning in Carroll County, Iowa. She grew up in the rural Manning area attending country school Ewoldt No. 2 through the eighth grade. She completed Manning High School, graduating with the Class of 1943. Lola worked at home and for various other families until her marriage.

On September 25, 1947, Lola was united in marriage with Alfred Ahrendsen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Audubon County, Iowa. She and her husband lived on farms in the Manning and Gray areas and were the parents of one daughter Linda Marie. In 1977 they retired from farming and moved into Manning. Lola then began working at the Corner Café until her retirement in 1993.

Lola was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and eventually transferred her membership to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club, Tri-county Singles Bible Group and Homemakers Club. She was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary where she was a past president. Lola was a consummate volunteer, not only for her clubs, but for anyone in the community who needed her help. She drove her friends and acquaintances for groceries, doctor appointments and other social activities. Lola was dedicated to helping at New Hope and the Manning Plaza. Lola was honored by being elected as Queen of the Manning Quasquicentennial in 2006.

After the death of her husband in 1982, Lola remained in their home in south Manning until she moved to her present home in 1998. Her daughter Linda died unexpectedly in 1997.

Lola remained active with the help of her family and many friends and died suddenly and unexpectedly at her apartment in Manning on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 10 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; daughter; twin brothers in infancy; brother Alvan Hansen; sisters-in-law Elaine Hansen and Dorothy Hansen; brother-in-law Bill Ahrendsen and wife Lydia and sister-in-law Lillie and husband Elmer Bauer.

She is survived by nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Ed Ahrendsen and wife Ilamae of Audubon and many friends.

Memory OF ME
I'd like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when fife is done.
I'd like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun
of happy memories that I leave
when life is done.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought, word and deed, and invites you to join them for lunch and fellowship at the church following the committal service.
