Lyle Loyd, son of Loyd and Esther (Stoelk) Borkowski, was born September 16, 1947, in Manning, Iowa. His family lived in Audubon and Manilla before moving to a farm south of Manning. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Lyle attended Manning Community Schools, graduating with the Class of 1965.

On October 4, 1966, he was inducted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Bliss and Ft. Hood, both in Texas. In 1967 he left Fort Lewis, Washington for Vietnam. He operated with Secret Security Clearance in the 6th Battalion, 15th Artillery, 1st Infantry Division in the "Iron Triangle" north of Saigon. He received his honorable discharge on August 11, 1968, as Specialist 5th Class. He was awarded many medals and commendations, including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Recently his battalion received the Valorous Unit Award for extraordinary heroism in Vietnam. He had a special bond with his Army buddies and thoroughly enjoyed reunions with them throughout the years, especially the one in May of this year.

Following his military duty, Lyle returned to Manning where he worked as a carpenter for Rasmussen Lumber Company. In 2005 Lyle started his own business, specializing in finish carpentry and remodeling. His family has been honored to live in the house he designed and lovingly built with his expert talents. Lyle shared his God-given talents by building superbly crafted cabinets enjoyed by many in the area. Daughters Kari and Amy especially treasure the solid oak bedroom sets and desks he built for them.

On June 11, 1983, Lyle was united in marriage with Marlene Uthe, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. To this union two daughters, Kari and Amy, were born. As a member of Zion Lutheran Church, faith was an important part of his life. Lyle was known as a selfless man, who was patient, caring, and optimistic in so many ways. He loved attending sporting events where his daughters were cheerleaders, as well as their dance recitals. Lyle adored his wife and daughters and loved to be together as a family.

He was a member of Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Post 3517 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His family has fond memories of Memorial Day and football games with Lyle serving on the Color Guard. Lyle was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and fought a courageous battle against the disease for two years. He passed away with family at his side, on Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center at the age of 67 years.

Preceding him in death are his parents and brother-in-law, Bruce Artherholt. He is survived by his wife Marlene Borkowski of Manning; two daughters Kari (Rob) Deal of Ames and Amy Borkowski of Ankeny; grandson Theodore Deal; siblings Janice Artherholt of Red Oak, Lenus (Kristie) Borkowski of Manning and JoAnn (Roger) Musfeldt of Omaha; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
