IN MEMORIAN Magdalene Claussen

Mrs. Magdalene Cathrina (Buhmann) Claussen was born in Holstein, Germany on the 12th day of April 1854, and entered upon her eternal rest on the 18th day of April, 1921, making her age at day of death to be 67 years and 6 days. On the 31st day of December, 1875, she was united in marriage to Mr. Hans C. Claussen with whom she lived happily until death separated them.

In the year 1884 they emigrated to this country, landing at Westside, Iowa, and lived for about a year 5 miles south of Westside. On the 1st of March 1895, they moved to Manning Iowa, where they have lived ever since their advent here 36 years ago. To this marital union there was given 12 children, three of these dying in infancy. Those living at this time are as follows: Mrs. Maggie Hoffmann, Mrs. Bertha Holmberg, Messrs. Claus, Rudolph, William, Herman, Harry, and Herbert Claussen, all of whom live in Manning. One daughter, Mrs. Ella Lane, lives at Los Angeles, California. Besides the husband and children left to mourn the death of this dear woman, there are two brothers and one sister here in America and 5 brothers in Germany and ten grandchildren.

In March 1918, she was the subject of a severe attack of heart disease but in answer to prayer God spared her life to see her four sons return from Germany whither they went to join the U.S. Army in the war with Germany. This happy event of having her dear boys back again safe in her maternal arms brought a joy that could not well be described in human language. About four weeks ago she was again stricken with that dreaded disease from which she never recovered though all that love and skill could suggest was done to avert the end, death itself.

To one and all who knew her excellent qualities of head and heart she ever proved herself to be a devoted wife and mother. Her life was hid in the life of her family and it may be said that husband and children alike were devotedly fond of doing for her whatever would bring her joy of heart. Flowers she loved not only material flowers, but flowers of appreciation which were lavished upon her profusely.

Mrs. Claussen was a devoted believer in the doctrines and worship of the Lutheran Church of which Dr. Martin Luther was the head. Her labors for the Woman's Aid of said church, a society of which she was president for many years, were unstinted and unbounded. She loved Christ and the church and now she has gone from us to receive the royal welcome into her eternal home where Jesus is.

This dear wife and mother will be greatly missed, but the joy of assurance that she is at rest from the sorrows of earth remains with the family and all the loved ones to assuage their grief in this sad hour of bereavement.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral are Mrs. D.E. Lane, Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Clare Gosch, Perry, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Petersen, Manilla, Mrs. Arthur Petersen, Manilla, and Mrs. Katie Karstens, Wilmont, Minnesota, a sister of Mrs. Claussen.

The funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, April 21st, 1921, in the M.E. Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Tait the Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. W.H. Meredith of the M.E. Church. Interment took place in the Manning cemetery.
