Malinda Catherine Emma, daughter of Carl and Tena (Hass) Otto, was born May 10, 1923, at home near Aspinwall, in Crawford County Iowa. She was baptized on December 5, 1923, at the Lutheran Church in Denison, by Pastor Bill Frase. Malinda attended rural schools in Iowa Township, Crawford County. On April 2, 1939, she was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Pastor J.M. Ansorge. After completing school she worked at other people’s homes in the area.

On January 22, 1946, Malinda was united in marriage with Walter John Dammann, by Pastor Ansorge at Zion Lutheran Church. Four children were born to this union. Malinda was a dedicated mother and homemaker throughout her life. She and Walter first lived on a farm north of Aspinwall, then after eight years there they spent twenty-two years on the Gordon Sutherland farm south of Manning. Eventually they bought her parent’s farm north of Manning where they lived and worked for seven years, until her husband died unexpectedly in 1982. She continued to live on the farm for nine years before moving to Manilla to be near her son. Malinda thoroughly enjoyed her friends and neighbors while living in Manilla. In addition to being with her friends in the Nishnabotna Club and various card clubs, she found great peace in taking long walks around Manilla and the near countryside. She also enjoyed crafts, crocheting and quilting, and was known around Manilla for her pie baking and cinnamon rolls. Malinda took great joy in hosting her grandchildren at her home on the farm during their summer vacations. Malinda was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Lincoln Township, and later Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla.

Malinda suffered a broken hip and a stroke in 2005. As a result she moved to a nursing home in Perry and then in 2008 became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. Malinda’s health declined following another stroke two weeks before her death. She died at the Manning Plaza on Friday, September 2, 2011, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 23 days.
