Marcella Henrietta, the daughter of Wilhelm and Minnie (Schultz) Martens, was born May 8, 1910, in Manning, Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized June 30, 1910, and confirmed May 20, 1923, at Zion Lutheran Church by Reverend Johann M. Ansorge. Marcella attended Manning schools, graduating with the Class of 1927. On March 14, 1930, Marcella was united in marriage to Edward Knaack at Zion Lutheran Church. Three children were born to this union. While still in school, she began working for her father in Martens Mercantile Store and later worked at Martens Variety Store owned by her brother, Al and her nephew, Gene. Edward was also working for Martens Variety Store when he died in 1975.

Marcella was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she participated in Women’s Guild, teaching Sunday School, and transcribed Braille. She was also a member of the Wa-tan-ya Club and the Garden Club. She helped plant flowers at the city park and helped plant and care for the flowers at her church. She enjoyed watching sporting events and visiting with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In July of 1993, Marcella moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home where she died March 2, 1998, following a lengthy illness. She reached the age of 87 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Besides her parents and husband, Marcella was preceded in death by two brothers: Bernhardt and Alvin Martens; a sister, Ethel and her husband, Harold Goedert; a brother-in-law, William Knaack; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Nile Foxworthy.

Marcella is survived by three children: Jerry Knaack and his wife, Toshiko, of San Jose, CA; Barbara and her husband, Roger Nielsen, of Denison; Philip Knaack and his wife, Brenda, of Oscoda, MI; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marg and her husband, Herb Thomas, of Strongsville, OH; four sisters-in-law: Clara Martens, of Manning; Marg Martens, of Bryan, OH; Alice Knaack, of North Hollywood, CA; Hildegard King of Knoxville; a brother-in-law, Joe King, of Knoxville; and by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
