Marcellus Grundmeier

Funeral services for Marcellus Ewald (Sal) Grundmeier were held Saturday, February 6, 1993 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service with Paula Weiss as organist. Interment was held in Arcadia Cemetery with Curtis Reiter, Damon Ellsworth, David Schilling, Russell Reiter, Chad Ellsworth and Chris Schilling as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were Pat Grundmeier, Darrin Ellsworth, John Grundmeier, Daniel Ellsworth, Benjamin Ellsworth and Craig Grundmeier.

Marcellus, son of Ewald and Frieda Koepke Grundmeier, was born June 15, 1907 on the home farm, in Carroll County, Iowa. He was bapitzed in 1907 and was confirmed on March 25, 1923 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. He attended country schools near his home.

On April 8, 1931 Sal was united in marriage with Evelyn Frahm at Arcadia. They lived on several farms in the vicinity of Halbur and Carroll until 1947 when they moved into Manning. At that time he and his wife became members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. After ten years in Manning they moved to Aspinwall where Sal operated his own garage. His wife died on May 20, 1966 at their home in Aspinwall.

Sal served as mayor of Aspinwall for 25 years. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, gardening and visiting with friends.

Sal's health began to fail in May of 1992. He entered the Manning Plaza two days before his death there on Wednesday, February 3, 1993 at the age of 85 years, 7 months, and 19 days.

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his children: (Sally) Joan and her husband, Ed Reiter, of Wall Lake; David Grundmeier and his wife, Bev, of Manning; Peggy and her husband, Ron Ellsworth, of Harlan; Joel Grundmeier and his wife, Alice, of Lakeside; Susan and her husband, Ron Schilling, of Aspinwall; and Mark Grundmeier and his wife, Jerri, of Manilla; 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Alvin Grundmeier and his wife, Lottie, of Carroll; two sisters: Hilda and her husband, Fred Branning, Sr., of Arcadia and Ruth and her husband, Alvin Tews, of Council Bluffs; a brother-in-law, Leonard Frahm and his wife, Shirley, of Raeford, North Carolina; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
