Marie Kathleen, daughter of Theodore and Clara (Eckerman) Kenkel, was born August 8, 1924, at Defiance, Iowa. She attended St. Paul’s School in Defiance and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Earling in 1942. After attending Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, she taught for five years.

On February 17, 1947, Marie was united in marriage with Virgil Bueltel at St. Peter’s Church in Defiance. Six children were born to this union. Virgil and Marie purchased the Bueltel Family Farm in 1948. They farmed and raised their family there until retiring in 1982. Marie worked at the Manning Hospital and Plaza as activity coordinator. They moved into Manning in 1996.

While living near Manilla, Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Community Club, Crawford County Farm Bureau, Friendly Farmer’s Club, Iowa Council of Activities Coordinators-Southwest District and Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. After they moved to Manning they joined Sacred Heart Parish in Manning.

Marie suffered a stroke in December of 1995. Life changed but she was still active. She suffered another stroke on July 5 and died the next day, Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 28 days.

She is preceded in death by her parents, aunt Elizabeth Kenkel, and brother Mark Kenkel.

Marie is survived by her husband Virgil Bueltel of Manning; six children: Lynn Bueltel and wife Jennifer of Naples, Florida; Jane and husband Larry Hulme of Papillion, Nebraska; John Bueltel and wife Karen of Glenwood; Mary and husband Ron Medley of LaVista, Nebraska; Joel Bueltel and wife Donna of Newburgh, Indiana; and Anne Bueltel and Nicholas Lorenzo of Olathe, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters: Ray Kenkel and wife Evelyn of Council Bluffs; Velma and husband Les Pedersen of Denison; Therese Scheuring of Defiance; Leona and husband Joe Moran of Honey Creek; Clarice and husband Fred Hansen of Waterloo; Ted Kenkel and wife Judy of Council Bluffs; JoAnn and husband Don Kuehnhold of Denison; and Joe Kenkel and wife Alice of West Point, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
