Martha Catherine Rohr Fieseler

Martha Rohr Fieseler, 102, of Greenwood Manor, died Tuesday, August 23, 2002, after a long illness and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City.

Martha Rohr Fieseler, daughter of Henry and Maria (Sonksen) Rohr was born November 30, 1899, at Manning, Iowa. She attended Manning, Iowa, schools, graduating in 1917. She taught rural schools for 7 years, then attended I.S.U. for a year and resumed her teaching in Gray, Iowa, and Irwin, Iowa. After graduating from Iowa State Teacher's College in Elementary Education, she came to Iowa City where she taught at Lincoln, Longfellow, and Horace Mann Schools until resigning in 1964, after teaching a total of 37 years. She was married to George Fieseler on July 23, 1944, in Seattle, Washington. He died in 1978.

She was baptized in Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa, and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She is a member of Lion Lutheran Church in Iowa City and a member of The Ruth Circle.

Her family consists of several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Her parents, nine sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Martha C. Fieseler died in Iowa City, IA an Aug. 27 at the age of 102. Funeral services were held Aug. 30 at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City with burial in Oakland Cemetery.

Born and raised in Manning, and graduated from Manning High School in 1917. At the first all-school reunion held in 1995, she was honored as Manning High School's oldest graduate, an honor which she enjoyed. Martha was a dedicated teacher for 37 years.

Readers may recall a photo and article about the spunky lady who chose to celebrate her 100th birthday by taking a motorcycle ride through Iowa City because "she had never done it before." The article appeared in the Manning News Journal in Aug. 2000.
