Mary James

The community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Mary E. James which occurred at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa on February 4, 1927. Mary Ellen Hagerty, daughter of Dan and Mary Hagerty, was born in Tama County, Iowa, on August 27, 1872. At the time of her death, she was 54 years, five months, and 17 days of age.

She was united in marriage to Joseph James on March 2, 1887, at Templeton, Iowa. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Mary Dolan, of Adair, Iowa; William A. James and Mrs. Clara Johnson, of Stuart; and Joseph Daniel, who died in infancy.

After her marriage, she resided on a farm south of Stuart until the death of her husband on March 30, 1910. She moved from there to Jefferson Township, where she remained until 1912, then taking up her residence in Stuart, where she had since lived. Mrs. James is survived by members of her immediate family, three grandchildren; two brothers, Will Hagerty, of Menlo; and Charles of Stuart. The funeral was held Monday morning February 7, 1927, at All Saints Church, Father Toher officiating. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery. Those present from out of town at the last rites were Mr. R. Dargin of Neola, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jones, of Atlantic, Iowa; Mr. Charles Carlson, and family of Adair; and Dan and Dennis Hagerty, of Tama, Iowa. Mrs. James will be remembered by her many friends and neighbors as a woman of exceptionally fine qualities, a good neighbor, and a friend to all in need. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and a firm believer in its tenets, the highest tribute that can be paid to any woman when life closes.
