Crowned with the jewels of a successful life and his work well finished, another soul departed its earthly dwelling place, to eventually claim its reward in the life beyond this.
The community was grieved when the word was passed that our towns-man Matthias Joens had passed away at his home Thursday evening. Mr. Joens had never been sick to the knowledge of his friends and little did they suspect that his hours were counted, when he took sick with the flu about two weeks ago. He was overcome by the disease which weakened his heart to such an extent that death was inevitable.
He was a man of true and sterling character, a kind neighbor, a loving husband and father, and one of the loyal citizens that made this country what it is today.
Matthias Joens was born December 6, 1855, at Erfde, Holstein, Germany, where he received his education and spent his boyhood days. At the age of 20 years he was drafted in the army and served for three years. In 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaretha Thomsen, and the young couple remained but about two months longer in their native land when they decided to come to America, settling in Clinton, Iowa, where the provider found employment in the saw mill. Working there for about a year, his desire became to engage in farming, and in 1889, he moved on a farm near Andover, Iowa. Residing there for six years, after which he came with a family to Manning where he purchased a fine farm about eight miles southwest of town. Toiling here until 1917, he felt that he and his true helpmate were entitled to an easier day and came to Manning to enjoy the fruits of hard labor. They purchased a fine home and lived here contented and peaceful until he died Thursday, January 17, 1929, at the age of 74 years, 1 month, and 11 days.
He leaves to mourn his bereaved widow, seven sons and one daughter, Matthias Joens of Buhl, Idaho, John Joens of Manilla, Clara (Mrs. John) Anthony of Westside, Herman Joens, Henry Joens, Bernard Joens, William Joens of Manning and Frank Joens at home. Also 17 grandchildren, two brothers Hans Joens of Omaha and Jurgen of Manning, and many other relatives and friends, who came to pay their last respect to the beloved neighbor and friend at the funeral which was held Monday, January 21, from the Lutheran church, conducted by Pastor John M. Ansorge under a very large attendance.
Interment was made at the Manning Cemetery.
The Monitor joins the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
Relatives from the distance attending the funeral were: Jurgen Schroeder of Clinton; Mrs. Henry Mueller of Clinton, a sister to Mrs. Joens; Fred Lengemann of Guthrie Center; Mr. and Mrs. Claus Bielefeldt of Denison and Emil Joens of Jefferson, Iowa, Mrs. Christine Kroeger, Carroll, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lamp of Westside, Iowa.
