Lee Merrill, son of Lee H. and Ella (Mulvihill) Callender, was born January 24, 1923, at Woodbine, Iowa. He attended the Woodbine schools.

In 1943 he was united in marriage with Phyllis Pfoltner. They farmed near Irwin until 1952 when they moved to a farm southwest of Manning. Merrill retired from farming in November 1983 at which time they moved into Manning.

Merrill had been in failing health for about 2 1/2 years before his death on Monday, November 12, 1984, at his home, 1212 South Main, Manning, Iowa. He was 61 years, 9 months, and 19 days of age.

Merrill was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerome Callender in August of 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Jerrold Callender of Omaha, Nebraska, and Patrick Callender of Denver, Colorado; one grandchild, Thomas Callender; one brother, Gene Callender of Manilla; and by one aunt, Marie Johnson of Mapleton. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
