Milda E. Backhaus was born December 8, 1910, the daughter of Herman and Augusta (Tech) Schillerberg. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Wednesday, August 3, 1994, at the age of eighty-three.

Milda was born on a farm in Hanover Township where she lived with her parents. She was baptized a Christian on January 15, 1911, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township and later confirmed there on April 13, 1924, by Rev. Runge. As a young girl, Milda received her education at St. Paul's Lutheran School.

On February 7, 1932, Milda was united in marriage to Harry Backhaus at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm in Ida County, until 1942 when they purchased a farm south of Westside. They continued to farm until 1979 when they retired and moved to Denison.

Milda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a former member of Zion Ladies Aid in Manning. She was a loving wife and caring mother and grandmother, who enjoyed cooking, canning, tending to her garden and flowering plants, which she took great pride in.
