Nick Andresen Is Laid To Rest

Nicolai Andresen was born on September 26, 1860, in Bredstedt, Schleswig/Holstein, Germany, where he received his education and spent his youthful days. He died March 31, 1936, at the age of 75 years, 6 months, and 5 days.

He was confirmed and received Holy Communion in 1874, after which he remained in his home surroundings until the age of 19 years, when he was drafted for military service, stationed at the German Capitol, Berlin, where he served in the 5th Eskadron, Company 9, in the Emperor's Garde Du Corps until 1883, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of a corporal and service attest "very good."

Working at his former vocation as farmer in his birth place, he was called again two years later for military service for about six weeks, and in 1889 he left for the United States where he expected to make a headway in life, settling in Clinton County, Iowa, where he lived a year. In 1890 he came to Manning, where he was married to Miss Catherine Thomsen the same year. To this happy union were born eight children: John Andresen; Martha, Mrs. Otto Hansen; Hertha, Mrs. Ed Hinners; Anna, Mrs. John Roggendorf; Albert Andresen; Elsie, Mrs. Ray Lohmeier; and Mary and Katie Frahm, the latter two passing this earthly life - Mary in 1917, and Katie in 1922. Besides this there are twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who remain.

In 1891, Mr. and Mrs. Andresen moved on a farm northwest of Manning where they resided until they purchased a larger farm four miles north of Manning, where they lived until 1922, when they retired from active farm life and moved to Manning purchasing a fine home on Third Street where they have resided since. His beloved wife passed away on February 12, 1935.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, April 3, 1936, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home, the Rev. Harry Coates of Woodward, Iowa, conducting the services. Interment was made at the Manning Cemetery. As pallbearers acted, Henry Ohde, Chris Pfoltner, Jurgen Clasen, Chris Barten, H.A. Boysen and J. Mundt.
