ORVILLE CARTER
Orville Carter, 77, a retired Manning farmer, died at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Sunday, January 6, 1980. He had been in failing health for several years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, at the Ohde Funeral Home here with the Rev. Donald Jones, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife Grace, a daughter Mrs. Beal (Leota) Austin, Des Moines; a son Merlin, Manning; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a brother Dallas Carter, Defiance.

He was preceded by two sons: Gailen Lyle and Ivan Dean, his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Mr. Carter was born October 13, 1902, near Watertown, South Dakota, a son of Harry and Grace (Kibby) Carter. In 1904, he moved with his family to a farm south of Manilla and in 1910 moved to the Defiance vicinity. He attended rural school near his home and the Defiance Public School.

He was married to Grace E. Godwin June 23, 1925, at the Methodist Parsonage in Harlan. They farmed near Defiance and in 1941 moved to a farm south of Manning. They retired to Manning in 1961.
