Otto Herman was born October 18, 1888, in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa, to John Henry and Maria (Mohr) Hagedorn. His parents were both born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and were married in Westside, Crawford County, Iowa. Otto attended country schools and worked on the family farm until he married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Marie Emma Passick, daughter of Otto and Sophie (Schmahl) Passick, on February 28, 1912, in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. They farmed near Manning until retirement in 1946, when they moved into Manning.

They had three children: Leona, Lucille, and Roy.

Otto was preceded in death by his parents, son Roy, three sisters, and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, daughters, Leona (Mrs. Charles Beerman) of Omaha, Nebraska; Lucille (Mrs. Harold Hodne) of Perry, Iowa: 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and brothers William of Sioux City, Henry of Manning, Herman of Walled Lake, Michigan, and John of Des Moines.
