Patrick & Celia Kinney
SAD CASE OF POISONING.
Thursday, shortly after dinner, the people of the town were startled by the appalling news
that Master Pat Kinney, a lad of the age of 14 years had suddenly died and no one
seemed to know the cause of death. Various stories were put in circulation, but the real
cause was not made known to the public until late in the afternoon, when the following facts
were ascertained. Pat had been complaining of not feeling well, and his ever devoted
sister Celia, a young lady of 19, proceeded to make him some ginger tea, and wanting it to
be pleasant for the little fellow to take, she put in the cup what she supposed to be sugar;
but alas! her mistake proved a fatal one. The brother left a portion of the compound in the
cup and Miss Celia drank it. In about an hour after he partook of the liquid he died. During
the afternoon the sister also felt a sickness of stomach, caused by the excitement of the
occasion and probably in part to partaking of the mixture, and she, too, sought relief in the
same "medicine" she had given her brother. Shortly thereafter she became violently sick
and while in this condition it flashed across her mind that it was probable she had
mistaken Rough-on-Rats for sugar. Investigation proved her surmises to be correct, and
everything that was possible was done for the relief of the young lady, but she was past
medical aid and died after suffering intense pain, at 2 o'clock Friday morning. It seems
that the custom in the family had been to keep sugar in a cloth and when the rat poison
came to the house it was also placed in a cloth and in the closet beside the sugar. This
double poisoning is a most terrible and sad affair and the sympathy of the entire
community is extended to the almost distracted parents, brothers and sisters. The double
funeral occurred from the Catholic Church on Friday afternoon, t he Rev. Father Byrne
officiating. The remains were interred in the new cemetery.
