Phyllis R., daughter of George and Ida (Kai) Pfoltner, was born October 31, 1924, at Manning, Iowa. She graduated from Manning High School in 1942. After completing her Normal Training, she taught rural school part-time.

In 1943 Phyllis was united in marriage with Merrill Callender. They farmed near Irwin until 1952 when they moved to a farm southwest of Manning. Two sons were born to this union. Phyllis was a busy homemaker, mother and helpmate to her husband on the farm. She helped with the milking cows, raised chickens and most anything else that needed to be done on the farm, especially when her husband was away doing custom work.

Phyllis was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She was an avid reader, loved playing cards, dancing and family get-togethers. She volunteered with the Manning Hospital Auxiliary in the Snack Bar. Over the years she thoroughly enjoyed her many pets.

After her husband retired from farming in 1983 they moved into Manning. Her husband died the next year and she remained in their home. When her health began to fail she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in 2012. Phyllis died there early Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 21 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Merrill Callender; brothers, Henry Pfoltner, in infancy and Harold (Erika) Pfoltner, and sister Lorene (Earl) Pfannkuch.

Phyllis is survived by her sons Patrick (Julie) Callender of Golden, Colorado, and Jerrold (Donna) Callender of Omaha, Nebraska; grandson Tom (Anne) Callender of Denver, Colorado; great-grandchildren Tom Jr. Callender and Elsie Callender; nieces Deborah (John) Hendry and Iris (Steve) Neukirch both of Lincoln, Nebraska, nephew Don (Mona) Callender of Waukee; other relatives and friends.
