SUDDEN DEATH.
November 16, 1911 Manning Monitor

Last Saturday morning about six o'clock death visited our community and claimed Robert Armstrong, one of the earliest settlers of this township. The summons of Mr. Armstrong came suddenly and unexpectedly. Mr. Armstrong was in his usual health, though subject to attacks of heart disease of late years, and his death cast gloom over the community in which he lived so long.

Robert Armstrong was born in Ireland, May 26, 1836; came to America in 1855, settling in Mercer County, Illinois. Was married to Jane Blakely of the same county, in 1869. Moved to Kansas in the spring of 1870, locating on a homestead one mile east of Mound Valley, which has been his home ever since. Died at his home November 4, 1911, in the 76th year of his age. He leaves a devoted wife, one daughter, Mrs. Laura Armstrong, of Macomb, Illinois, four sons, Clarence, of Deep River, Iowa; Charles, Frank, and Orlan, here at home. Also leaves one brother, Thomas of Manning, Iowa.

Deceased had always been an active and energetic man, enduring the hardships of pioneer life cheerfully, and making his home a pleasant place to visit, everybody being welcome to sit at his fireside. Of genial nature, good humor generous and hospitable, he made friends of all. His convictions, whether right or wrong, were honest and sincere. He was one of our reliable citizens, highly respected and esteemed, and his death is deeply regretted by a host of friends throughout the community where he had lived for 41 years.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. L.W. Foster, the church being filled to overflowing with sorrowing and sympathizing friends and neighbors, attesting the popularity of deceased and family. Interment in Mound Valley Cemetery.
