Ronald Farley, Sr.

Ronald Eugene Farley, Sr., age 77, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Floyd and Florence (Schrater) Farley on June 27, 1933, Manilla, Iowa. He received his education from the Manilla School and continued his education through the Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Engineering in 1956.

On February 12, 1955, Ronald Sr. was united in marriage with Jeanne Marie Lyden at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa. The couple made their home in Harlan, Iowa. Ronald was an engineer assisting with the construction of the Memorial Hospital in Harlan. In 1959 they moved to Capistrano Beach, California. Ron and his brother Virgil were co-engineers of the new hospital in South Laguna Beach, California. In 1971 they moved to Waverly, Iowa. Ron was the chief engineer of the Waverly Municipal Hospital for nearly 30 years. They moved to Aplington in 1992 prior to his retirement in the spring of 1995.

Ron attended the Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He was a member of the National Engineers Association.

In their spare time they enjoyed helping set up the auctions in Waverly, Wellsburg and Eldora. Through the years they enjoyed polka dancing and was a member of the Iowa Polka Club. He looked forward to and enjoyed many family fishing trips they took together and would go where ever the fish were biting. Ron collected antiques and records and also enjoyed gardening and tending to the flowers. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Ron died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, from complications following surgery. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Berdella (Merle) Anthony; and one brother, Virgil Farley.

Ron is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jeanne Farley of Aplington, Iowa; one son, Ronald (Michele) Farley, Jr. of Aplington, Iowa; two daughters, Sherie Farley of Oxnard, California, and Diane Farley Taylor of West Union, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jessie Farley, Ashley Farley and Brandon Holm; two brothers, Robert (Bonnie) Farley of Coggon, Iowa, and Larry (Adella) Farley of Manilla, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Joanne Farley of Capistrano Beach, California; and many nieces and nephews.
