Ruby Mae Eagan

Ruby Mae Eagen, 85, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and formerly of Manning, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Emmanuel Nursing Home.

Memorial service for Ruby was held Thursday, July 2, at Grace Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Officiating was the Rev. Roy Noel.

David Donehower Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Ruby was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes. She was born March 24, 1930, at Washington Township, Manning, Iowa, to Clarence and Mabel (Vollstedt) Borkowski. Ruby was baptized May 23, 1930, and confirmed March 25, 1945, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Ruby married Don A. Eagen on October 6, 1946, in Irwin, Iowa. They lived in the Shelby, Audubon, Guthrie, and Carroll Counties in Iowa until they moved to Detroit Lakes in 1981.

They purchased a bait shop in Shoreham, named it Ruby's Bait Shop and operated it five years before selling it.

She first attended rural school in Shelby County and partial high school in Manning. After all of her eight children were in school, she returned to school and earned her GED.

During her lifetime, Ruby worked various jobs including waitressing and as a nurse aide at Shelby County, Iowa. She also worked at Swift Turkey plant in Frazee, Minnesota, and as a cook at County Market in Detroit Lakes before retiring in 1996.

Ruby spent many hours canning produce from the garden she and Don maintained. Her jams and jellies were second-to-none. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and bird-watching. She also loved collecting fowl plates.

She is survived by three daughters and four sons, Mary (James) House of Miles, Iowa; Robert (Mary) of Morehead, Minnesota; Dick (LaVerne) of Tucson, Arizona; Jacklyn LaWare (Keith LeValley) of Wichita, Kansas; Joseph (Nancy) of Omaha, Nebraska; David (Lynn) of Hunter, North Dakota; and Rose (Greg) Dryden of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; 25 grandchildren; 58 (and counting) great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley Lesto of Wells, Minnesota, and La Rae Walgenbach of Nesbit, Mississippi; brother Melvin (Leota) Borkowski of Carroll, Iowa; two half-brothers, Dan and Dennis; one half-sister, Debbie; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Eagen of Guthrie, Iowa.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Don; one daughter, Donita; her parents, Clarence and Mabel Borkowski; one sister, Janet; six brothers-in-law; paternal grandparents, Otto and Emma Borkowski; maternal grandparents, William and Cecile Vollstedt; one great-grandchild, Elizabeth; one half-brother, Dick; one sister-in-law, Versa Hansen; and stepmother Bernice Borkowski.
