Ruby Berdine, only child of Rudolph and Freda (Bargenquast) Ewoldt, was born July 7, 1921, on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa. Ruby started her schooling in a rural school near their farm in Crawford County and continued her schooling at Manilla High School where she graduated in 1939.

On June 5, 1939 Ruby was united in marriage with Vincent E. Kloewer at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Eleven children were born to this union. Ruby and Vincent farmed east of Defiance for 14 years and then south of Manilla until they moved into Manilla in 1960. Ruby was kept busy with caring for the children and helping on the farm. Ruby worked as a grocery store clerk and a nurse's aide at the Manilla Manor after the children were grown. Ruby enjoyed family gatherings, bingo, crocheting, volunteer work at the Manilla Manor and her picture and crossword puzzles. She was a long time member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla; current member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll, Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Following a brief illness Vincent died in 1999. A year later Ruby moved to Carroll. As Ruby's health declined, she was unable to live alone and moved to St. Anthony Nursing home in 2009. Ruby died there on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. She was 91 years, 3 months and 16 days of age.
