Obituary

Samuel Bingham was born June 15,1832 at Belfast, Ireland and died April 7th 1918 in his 86th year at Manning, Iowa. He was married November 7, 1859 to Miss Jane A. Collison of Avon, Illinois. Eleven children were born to this union. Nine of whom survive him and were present at the funeral. They are George H. of Bradford, Kansas; I.O. and J.E. and Mrs. D.G. Rogers, all of Hartington, Nebraska.
Mrs. J.W. Smith of Red Oak, Iowa, S.C and D.H. and O.C. and Mrs. S.G. Babcock all of Manning. Also Mary and Maud, two daughters having passed on before. Mr. Bingham was a member of the Methodist church uniting from probation in 1903.
He was a kind father, a loving husband and a good neighbor, whose integrity an untiring energy make him a constructive force in our civilization, and in many respects a worthy example to emulate. He was faithful in his church relationship and his loss will be felt by his loving and devoted wife, by his family and by his friends and neighbors who had known him. He passes to his reward and for him the battle is fought and his Victory won. Samuel Bingham was one of the pioneers of Warren Township. He came here with the first settlers, and he and his sorrowing wife suffered all the privations of the early settler. They bought land and prospered and have to show for their efforts a beautiful country home, two miles south of Manning. Mr. Bingham loved his farm life and never retired, living all his years since settling in this township on his farm. However, of late years he gave up farm work, and spent his declining years busying himself about his home and garden. He was a man of remarkable strength and intelligence and kept his health and strength until a few years ago when attacks of rheumatism caused him considerable pain and trouble.

The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. Hundreds of his friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last sad respect. Services were conducted by Rev. Illsley, pastor of the Manning M.E. Church, after which kinds hands took the body to the Manning cemetery for burial. Samuel Bingham in leaving this earth leaves a rich heritage in the shape of an excellent family, sons and daughters any father could be proud of. His body is buried but his spirit still lives and his memory will long be cherished by all who knew him. Truly he fulfilled his mission on this earth and when he reaches his home on high he will find a home prepared for him where he will rest until the time comes when he will assemble again with his beloved ones.
