Last Rites Held For Sam Gaskill

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for. Samuel Gaskill, long time resident of this vicinity, who passed away Thursday afternoon, July 25, 1940, at the home of Mrs. Minnie Murray. Mr. Gaskill suffered a stroke six and a half years ago since which time he had been bedfast. Samuel Gaskill, son of Elijah ad Susan M. Gaskill, was born in Clinton County, Ohio on October 11, 1863, and passed away at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 15 days.

Mr. Gaskill spent his early days Ohio and came to Iowa in 1881.
In 1885 he came to Shelby County where he engaged in farming. In 1890 he was married to Chistina Wooster who passed away in 1910.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gaskill six of whom survive. They are Mrs. Barbara Lansman, Audubon; Clifton Gaskill, Casey, Ia.; Zetta Thulen, Manning, Lyle Oscar and Edmund Gaskill of Audubon. Two passed away in infancy. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; his brother William Gaskill of Los Angeles, Cal. and a sister Mollie Landrum of Atlantic.

Short funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Ohde Funeral Home after which the body was taken to Irwin where services were held at 2 p.m. in the Methodist Church. Interment was made in the Irwin Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were six of his grandchildren.

Services were in charge of Rev. Harold N. Olson, pastor of the Irwin-Kirkman Methodist churches. Those from out of town attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Gaines, Mrs. Leonard Gaines, Mrs. Mollie Landrum, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Vetter and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Knap, Ray Harris, all of Atlantic; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Miller of Avoca; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson, Omaha, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Whiteman, Exira; Mrs. Shelby Christinsen, Creston.
