Death of Mrs. John G. Beal.
Sophia A. (Coburn) Beal was born in Weare, New Hampshire, May 8, 1836, moved from there
to Gland de Tour, Illinois, in 1840 with her parents who were pioneers of that territory. She was
educated in Miss Sill's school at Rockford, Illinois, which now bears the name of "Rockford
Female Seminary.'' She was married at her family home in Rockford, Illinois, to John G.
Beal, April 7, 1857, at the age of 21 years. She has always lived a Christian life and her
motto was "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." She moved to Visalia,
California, in the fall of 1905, where death came to her relief after years of suffering from
heart trouble. She died October 20, 1907, at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 12 days and
was buried in the city cemetery Visalia, California, October 22, with the honor of the W.R.C
and members of the G.A.R. acting as pall bearers. Her grave was an embankment of most
beautiful flowers, donated by sympathizing friends. Thus passed to the great beyond a true
and noble wife and mother whose friends were legion.
