Sylvester William, son of Engelbert and Frances (Schlichter) Irlbeck, was born May 17, 1917, at home south of Templeton in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended Sacred Heart School in Templeton and after his schooling. Sylvester helped out at home.
In 1939 Sylvester graduated from the Iowa Barber College in Des Moines. returned to Templeton and began working for Nic Ohlinger Barber Shop. In January of 1941, Sylvester joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War Il. Following his honorable discharge in December of 1945, he returned to Templeton, resuming work with Nic Ohlinger.
On April 30, 1946, Sylvester was united in marriage with Ardella Bluml at St. Augustine's Church in Halbur. Eight children were born to this union. They lived in Templeton for 2 years before purchasing a tavern, cafe and barbershop in Halbur, where they lived for 7 years. In 1955 they moved to a farm south and east of Templeton where they lived and raised their children. During this time, he also worked as an insurance agent for 25 years. In 1984 they moved to their present home in Templeton. Sylvester operated a barbershop for 63 years and during his retirement, he continued to barber and make many wooden furniture and craft items in the back of the barbershop.
Sylvester was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus whom he served as Grand Knight for eight years. He was also a member of the American Legion in Dedham and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Manning. In his spare time he enjoyed making wooden crafts, playing cards and having coffee with his friends at the barbershop.
On June 19, 2002 Sylvester suffered a stroke from which he later died on Wednesday, June 26, 2002. at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He was 85 years, I month and 10 days of age.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sister: William (Speed) Irlbeck; Alphonse Irlbeck; Felix Irlbeck; Frances Kemper; Albert Irlbeck: Anselm Irlbeck; and a daughter-in-law Glenda Irlbeck.
Sylvester is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ardella Irlbeck of Templeton; children: Dale Irlbeck of Greeley, Colorado; Joan Seddon of Templeton; Don Irlbeck of Templeton; Jan and husband Jack Wafful of Fort Dodge; Mike Irlbeck and his wife Mern of Carroll; Gary Irlbeck and his wife Shell of Templeton; Kevin Irlbeck and his wife Lynn of Templeton; Joleen and her husband Tony Janssen of Glidden; 15 grandchildren: a sister-in-law Lorraine Irlbeck of Templeton; and nieces, nephews. other relatives and many friends.
