Thelma was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. At a very early age she moved with her parents to a farm near Irwin, Iowa. She attended country school and lived on the farm until she graduated from Irwin High School in 1943.

After graduating, she worked at an egg drying plant, Priebe and Son, in Manning, Iowa. It was in Manning where she met Lester Hargens. Lester served in the army in World War II and was wounded in France and received a Purple Heart.

Thelma was united in marriage to Lester Hargens on August 4, 1946, in Manning, Iowa. They were the parents of eight children: Richard, Randy, Russell, Roger, Rodney, and three deceased: Karen, Eugene and Robert.

Thelma, Lester and their five sons moved to Avoca on July 9, 1967. After marriage, she cleaned houses and worked at the Avoca Day Care and also was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing bingo, loved writing poetry and telling jokes. Thelma was a very caring person and loved her family very much; her brother and sisters meant a lot to her. She was not a judgmental person and never talked bad about anyone.
