Vera Gay, daughter of Selim and Rose (VanHorn) Kooker, was born November 21, 1911, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. At the age of four she moved with her parents to Northern Iowa. She attended elementary school at Lake Center Consolidated School and graduated from high school in 1929 at Ruthven, in Palo Alto County. After graduation she enrolled at Thompson Beauty College in Des Moines. She lived in Alden and Osceola where she managed beauty shops. Vera moved to Manning in 1930 to pursue her beauty profession.

On June 10, 1933, Vera was united in marriage with Eddie A. Fischer at a rose garden in Des Moines. Two sons were born to this union. Vera enjoyed working as a hairstylist for 54 years. Eddie was an accomplished musician and later became partners with his brother George at Manning Motor Company. In July of 2000, Vera’s sister Velma Curtis moved from San Diego to live with Vera and Eddie. Eddie’s health began to fail and he died September 25, 2001, and Vera and Velma continued to live in their home in Manning.

Vera was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Manning, The National and Chartered WaTanYe Clubs for Professional Women, and National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association. She also enjoyed working around the house, doing yard work, traveling and golfing.

Vera died on Monday morning, January 14, 2002, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center, Manning, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 1 month and 24 days.

Besides her husband and parents, Vera is preceded in death by her two sons Bruce Fischer in 1965 and Dennis Fischer in 1990; a brother Forrest Kooker; a brother-in-law Paul Curtis.

Vera is survived by two brothers: Halford Kooker and his wife Mamie, and Bruce Kooker and his wife Mary Jane, all of Des Moines; a sister Velma Curtis of Manning, formerly of San Diego, CA; a sister-in-law Dorothea Kooker of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law Florine Fischer of Carroll; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.


Vera Fischer is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
