Vergene Esther Hollander was born February 19, 1924, the daughter of Louis and Esther (Popp) Bohnsack. She passed away at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa, on Monday, April 30, 2012, at the age of 88.

Vergene was born on a farm near Arcadia, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ at Zion Lutheran Church on April 20, 1924, by Pastor Theos Tews in Arcadia. At age nine, the family moved to Manning, Iowa, where she was confirmed on May 10, 1936, by Pastor Johann Ansorge, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She received her education in the Manning Community School where she went by the name of "Jeanne" and graduated in 1942. On March 8, 1942, she was united in marriage to Bernhardt "Slick" Hollander in Maryville, Missouri. This union was blessed with the birth of six children.

Vergene worked side by side with her husband Slick in his many business adventures that took them many places including Denison, Greenfield, Ida Grove, Auburn, and finally back to Denison where they retired in 1983. The couple was honored to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in 2002. Vergene was president of the Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Dorcas. Her greatest strength was her faith in God.

Vergene enjoyed her children, especially when they were all gathered for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and most of all "just getting together." She had a knack for making quilts and embroidering tea towels and pillowcases for her children. One of her greatest joys was babysitting her grandchildren and playing many various card games together.

Vergene was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; one brother, Louis; her husband, Bernhardt "Slick" Sr.; two sons, Ron and Bernhardt, Jr.; and one son-in-law, Ron. Left to cherish her memory are four daughters, Joan and her husband, Wayne; Lynn and her fiancee Lenny; Robin and her husband, Craig; and Tracey Bettin; and one daughter-in-law, Cheryl; 20 grandchildren; 27great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
