Verna Marie, daughter of Peter Henry and Mae Carrie (Stribe) Schroeder, was born August 21, 1915, on a farm in Lincoln Township near Gray, Iowa. She grew up in the area and graduated from Gray High School in 1933. Verna completed a two year teaching certificate at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. She taught country school before her marriage on June 2, 1936, to Leroy Musfeldt. Four sons were born to this union.

Verna and Leroy lived in Jefferson and Scranton before returning to a farm southwest of Gray in 1940. In 1948 Verna and Leroy purchased a farm that became Verna's home for the next 37 years. In 1966 Verna started teaching in Manning while continuing her education. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1971 and taught until 1979. In April of 1979 her husband died unexpectedly on their farm. She continued to live on the farm until her marriage to George Fischer on May 17, 1985, when she moved into Manning with George. He died in 1997 and Verna continued to live in their home in Manning.

In November of 1999, Verna moved to Lakeside Terrace assisted living community in Omaha, Nebraska to be near her family. In November 2004 she moved to Victoria Gardens assisted living community in Bellevue, Nebraska. She died there on Thursday, February 16, 2006, at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 26 days.

Verna was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of Garden Club. In her spare time, Verna enjoyed painting and ceramics. Playing the piano was also one of her many pastimes.

Preceding Verna in death are her parents; husbands; brother, in infancy; brother George Schroeder and sister Alta Mae Wilson.

She is survived by her four sons: Lauron Musfeldt and wife Beverly of Longview, TX; Ralph Musfeldt and wife Betty of Lafayette, CO; Dale Musfeldt and wife Georgia of Ankeny; and Roger Musfeldt and wife Jo Ann of Omaha, NE; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
