Verna E. Karstens
Funeral services for Verna E. Karstens were held Saturday, July 24, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Manning, Iowa. Pastor Tom Buzbee officiated the service with Connie Siepker as organist. Interment was held in Manning Cemetery, Manning, Iowa, with Harold Schmidt, Richard Schmidt, Michael Schmidt, Harry Hagedorn, Duane Karsten, and Bill Opperman as casket bearers.

Verna E., daughter of John and Anna (Hagedorn) Karstens, was born May 11, 1904, in Manning, Iowa. She grew up in the Manning area, and attended school, graduating with the class of 1922. She continued her education at the University of Iowa, earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1926. After she earned her degree in education, she taught in Manilla for two years, then in Perry until she retired.

After she and her twin sister Viola retired, they moved back to Manning and lived with and cared for their mother. Also, after their retirement, Verna and Viola substituted for teachers in the Manning school system.

Verna was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, many educational organizations and a college fraternal society.

When Verna and Viola's health began to fail, they moved to the Risen Son Nursing Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Viola died on March 26, 1996. In July 1998, Verna moved to the Glen Haven Nursing Home in Glenwood, Iowa where she died on July 20, 1999, at the age of 95 years, 2 months and 9 days.

Besides her twin sister, Verna was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by cousins and other relatives and friends.
