Vernetta Margareta Helena, daughter of Charles and Julia (Vinke) Thiedeman, was born May 8, 1914, at Manning, Iowa. She grew up on a farm north of Manning and attended country school nearby. She then worked at home. On November 20, 1938, Vernetta was united in marriage with Myles Dau in Manning. Two children were born to this union. Vernetta worked at Ohde Funeral Home until Myles returned from his service in World War II. Vernetta and Myles farmed in the Westside and Manning area. In the early 1960s, they moved into Manning where Vernetta worked in the kitchen at Manning General Hospital, retiring after 20 years. Myles died January 4, 1975. Vernetta was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married and was also active in the Guild. She was a 60-year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a member of the Manning General Hospital and Plaza Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking, cooking and gardening. In September of 2005, Vernetta became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa, where she died on Saturday, April 8, 2006. She was 91 years and 11 months of age. Vernetta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister Leola and husband Marvin Kuhl, and a step-great grandson Austin Johns. She is survived by her children Doris and husband Lowell Neumann of Denison and Dennis Dau of Maryville, Missouri; a grandson Todd Struble and wife Diane Johns-Struble of Denison; two great grandsons Nicholas and Noah; other relatives and many friends.
