Vernon was baptized at the Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa, and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. He attended rural Audubon County School (Lincoln No. 9) and graduated from the Gray High School with the Class of 1944. Vernon then helped operate the family farm and helped other farmers.

On October 12, 1952, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Lake at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. They were blessed with one daughter Gloria. They operated the family farm near Gray, Iowa, where they grew row crops and raised livestock. Later while he was still farming he started driving the school bus for the Gray Consolidated Schools then later drove school buses for the Audubon Community Schools. They retired from farming and moved into Audubon. Vernon continued his bus driving but also helped as a grounds keeper for the Audubon Schools until he retired.

Vernon was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. He enjoyed going to the stock car races, watching TV, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Vernon enjoyed reading the paper and everyday would read it from front page to back page. He kept himself physically fit by walking several miles every day. Vernon liked cars and always had all his cars "spit" polished. But most of all he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they participated in their many activities. He enjoyed spending his birthday with all of the family especially his granddaughter Tami who shared the same birthday.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers-in-law Harold Scott, Robert Lake, Carl Lee Lake, and Leroy Hansen; and his sister-in-law Eleanor Lake.
