Virgil Leroy, son of Frank Lewis and Nettie Elizabeth (French) Crouch, was born October 28, 1915, the youngest of seven children. He was born in the family farmhouse four miles east of Irwin, Iowa. Virgil attended Jefferson No. 8 country school near his home and helped on the family farm.

After returning from a potato harvest in North Dakota in 1934, Virgil met Mildred Doyel at the Manning skating rink. They eloped to Elk Point, South Dakota, and were united in marriage on February 13, 1935. Virgil and Mildred made their home in Irwin and raised five children. Virgil purchased his first truck in 1936 and owned and operated Crouch Trucking for 42 years with the help of his wife in the office. They retired in 1979.

Virgil and Mildred enjoyed life, including raising livestock, gardening, traveling in their motor home, boating, fishing and spending time with family and friends. After nearly 76 years of a loving marriage, Mildred died on December 26, 2010.

Virgil remained in their home in Irwin where he continued to enjoy the companionship of his cat Miss Susie. Virgil enjoyed good health until about a week before his death on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Alegent Creighton University Medical Center at the age of 96 years, 10 months and 30 days.
