VIRGINIA DETHLEFS
Virginia Marian, daughter of Robert and Josephine (Axland) Brown, was born November 11, 1920, in Irwin, Iowa. She grew up in Irwin and graduated from high school there in 1938. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years and taught school in Peru, Irwin, Manilla, Denison, and, for 25 years, in Manning. During her early teaching years, Virginia continued her education, earning her bachelor's degree from Drake University in 1967.

On July 20, 1951, Virginia was united in marriage with Kenneth George Dethlefs at Fairmont, Minnesota. They made their home in Manning. Virginia took some time off from her teaching career to raise their two daughters. She retired in 1984.

Throughout her life, Virginia was active in her church and in her community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and served as financial secretary; United Methodist Women; P.E.O.; Retired Teachers; and was a charter member of the Tuesday Night Women's Bowling League. She volunteered her time for many other worthwhile activities in Manning.

Of utmost importance to Virginia was her family. She had the wonderful ability to make everyone feel comfortable and wanted. She enjoyed traveling, going to movies, visiting with her many friends and flower gardening.

Virginia died suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, October 18, 1997, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. She was 76 years, 11 months, and 7 days of age.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Kenneth; two daughters, JoAnn and her husband, Jim Karsten and Georgia and her husband, Rick Lohrmann; and one granddaughter, Erica Lohrmann, all of Manning. She is also survived by two sisters, Betty and her husband, Dean Drake, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Roberta Brown, Ames; as well as other relatives, her many students and a host of friends.
