Pioneer Dies At Age of 90, Funeral Today;
June 29, 1936

Wiebke Hoffmann Grube, daughter of John Hoffmann and his, wife, Frauke, nee Thede, was born January 8, 1846, at Elsdorf near Rendsburg in Holstein, Germany. She was educated and spent her girlhood days in her native country, coming to America at the age of 17 years. She settled in Davenport, Iowa, where she provided for herself in assisting with general housework.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Chris Grube on October 10, 1865 at Davenport, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Davenport for two years after which they came to Cedar county, Iowa, where they resided one year. Later they moved to Benton Co., where they rented a farm for five years. Frugality and good management on their farms enabled them to establish a home of their own, and with the desire to go farther west, they came to Crawford county and purchased a fine farm on the Carroll county line about six miles south of Westside. Here they made their home until 1881 when they retired from active farm life and moved to Manning which was at the time when Manning started. They have made their home here since, Mr. Grube being very active in civic affairs and through farsightedness and wise management, accumulated a fortune which kept them well provided in their declining years.

Mr. and Mrs. Grube enjoyed nearly 67 years of happy married life.

Mr. Grube passed away on August 31, 1932 at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 13 days. Mrs. Grube attained the ripe old age of 90 years, 5 months and 21 days.

She is, mourned by one adopted son, Leonard Williams and his wife Genevieve, one sister, Mrs. Henry Horman and many other relatives and friends.

Death has taken from us a weary wanderer, who traveled her earthly path in honesty, integrity, truth and love. She was kind in all her transactions with neighbors and friends, and she was a loving wife and a true companion to her husband. Her motherly ways in her home endeared her into the hearts of those around her. May her soul rest in peace.

Mrs. Grube enjoyed fairly good health until a few months ago when she became bedfast on account of her age and complications.

Mrs. Grube passed away Monday evening, June 29th. Funeral services were held this afternoon at two o'clock at the home on Third Street. Rev. E. J. Hough of Shenandoah conducting the services. Interment was made in the Manning cemetery beside her husband.

As pallbearers acted: J.A. Lewis, R.G. Sutherland, Jul Wehrenann, Harry Hinz, John Frahm and H.C. Reinholdt.
