Wilbur Gene, son of Ferdinand and Anna (Struve) Hill, was born September 7, 1920, at his home northwest of Manning in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended country school near his home. Wilbur then farmed with his father and older brother.

On April 16, 1944, Wilbur was united in marriage with Wynona 'Nonie' Hansen at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Three children were born to this union. Wilbur and Nonie made their home northeast of Manning. In 1961 they purchased a farm 1.5 miles west of Manning, moving there in 1965. Wilbur's fondness for cattle and raising livestock dates to the 1930s when he showed cattle at AKSARBEN. In addition to farming, Wilbur operated a grain cleaning business with his 'beanery' throughout western Iowa for over 30 years. In 2002 Nonie became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home, and in 2003 Wilbur moved to Terrace Apartments in Manning to be close to her.

Wilbur was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge. Throughout the years, he enjoyed fishing, playing cards, traveling and dancing with Nonie. He enjoyed baseball and followed the St. Louis Cardinals when he was young and the present day Chicago Cubs. He was also an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. Wilbur had a knack for visiting with people and cherished time spent with his grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

On July 25, 2005, Wilbur was diagnosed with cancer and died Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. He was 84 years, 11 months and 17 days of age.

Besides his parents, Wilbur was preceded in death by his older brothers: Marvin Hill and wife Faye and Albert Hill and wife Jean; twin brother Willus Hill; a younger brother Harold Hill; and a sister Faily Hill.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Nonie Hill of Manning; children: Sheryl and husband Lenny Carstens of Council Bluffs; Ron Hill of Omaha, NE; Mike Hill and wife Beth of Manning; three grandchildren: Jill and husband John Faust of Council Bluffs; Laura Hill of Iowa City and Jessica Hill of Manning; three great-grandchildren: Catie, Joey and Caroline Faust of Council Bluffs; sisters-in-law: Lois Hill of Manning; Viola Hill of Schleswig; Elaine and husband Robert Cornwell, Betty Krantz and Kathleen Hansen, all of Des Moines; Neta and husband Leon Coenen of Shell Beach, CA; Linda and Andy Gancy of St. Peters, MO; brother-in-law Palmer Hansen and wife Bonnie of Des Moines; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Final Harvest
He was bound to the land from the day of his birth
His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth
Nurtured, sustained, by the soil he grew
And his life, like his furrows, ran straight and true.

In faith, each spring, he planted the seeds
In hope, to reap for his family's needs
With patience, he waited for the harvest to come
To gather the fruits of his labor home.

Ever turning seasons, the years sped past
Till the final harvest came at last
Then claimed anew by beloved sod
He was gathered home to be with God.
