William, son of Dethlef and Christina (Fischer) Asmus, was born August 22, 1893 at the family home in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa, when William was two years old the family moved a few miles to their farm in Lincoln Township. He attended the parochial school at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township which was conducted in German and usually taught by the pastor. William also attended the rural school near his home at times. On January 21, 1920 William was united in marriage with Ella Ida Ress at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Manning. They spent their entire life farming. William aided in introducing registered Hereford cattle to Audubon County and raised breeding stock for many years. Even after semi-retirement to a farm one half-mile south of the family farm he continued to care for livestock. He gradually assumed many household tasks as his wife's arthritis restricted her activity and lovingly cared for her even after they moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon in 1981. Ella died there on January 5, 1985.

During William's lifetime he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Laymen's League, Farm Bureau, and the American Hereford Association.

William's health really began to fail about 2 1/2 years ago and he died on Thursday, January 10, 1991 at the Friendship Home in Audubon at the age of 97 years, 4 months, and 19 days.

Besides his wife and parents he was preceded in death by three children: a son in infancy; a daughter, Alma, in infancy; and a daughter, Arlene, Mrs. George Bruhn, in 1957; two grandchildren: Mary Ellen Kurth and Timothy Kurth; a granddaughter-in-law, Sharon Raabe Kurth; a great-granddaughter, Emily Kurth; a great-grandson, Benjamin Pedersen; a brother, Henry; and three sisters: Dora Sonksen, Wilhelmina Sonksen, and Anna Ahrendsen.

William is survived by a daughter, Pearl and her husband, Emil Kurth, of Carroll; a son, Amos Asmus and his wife, Myra, of Audubon; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and other relative and friends.

Wilhelm Asmus is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
