November 1917 WILLIAM KUSEL

Mr. William Kusel was born in Proenitz at Lenzen, Prussia, on June 24, 1850. When but a year and a half old his parents emigrated to the United States, coming to Davenport, Iowa. Here he grew to manhood, and when a young man, went to Scott County, Iowa. Here he was married to Miss Sophia Grube of Wilton, Scott County, on March 1, 1873. After a residence of one year he removed to Crawford County, Iowa, in which county he resided some seven years.

In the year 1881 he moved his family to Carroll County, Iowa, on a farm where thrift and prosperity crowned his years. In the year 1901 he moved his family to Manning to his present home. He was the father of 10 children, seven of whom survive and are as follows: Henry and August of Bloomfield, Nebraska, Mrs. August Hansen, Mrs. Joe Zender and Mrs. Luther Tate, Manning, Mrs. H. Nulle of Sisseton, South Dakota, Mrs. Blair Jarvis of Walthan, Minnesota. Two brothers, Mr. Chris Kusel, Newell, South Dakota, August Kusel, Salem, Oregon and one sister, Mrs. Henry Grube of Manning, also survive. There are eighteen grandchildren living all of whom with the wife and mother and children mourn this sad bereavement.

The deceased as a child was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He was a man of unusual health and vigor until a week before his death. He made slight complaint but remained on his feet about his home until Monday morning, when the bursting of a blood vessel snapped the brittle thread of life in a flash. His home has been in Manning for the past sixteen years. He was a courteous and pleasant neighbor and good citizen, whose passing leave a vacancy hard to fill. His age at death was 67 years, 4 months and 18 days.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, November 15 in the Presbyterian Church. Rev. Aller, pastor of the church, and Rev. Krumm, pastor of the German Evangelical Church, conducting the services. There was a large attendance of neighbors and friends present to pay their last sad respect to the deceased.

The Manning Schuetzen Verein, in respect for their departed brother, marched in a body to the church and to the cemetery, where burial took place.

August Kusel of Salem, Oregon, was delayed on his way, and reached Manning too late for the funeral. Chris Kusel was unable to be present on account of sickness in his family. Those sorrowing have the deep sympathy of all their friends in their great loss.

William Kusel is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
