TERIBLE ACCIDENT
December 12, 1912 Manning Monitor

A terrible accident happened near the Great Western Depot last Friday about 4:30 o'clock when a lone engine passing through struck and instantly killed Zachariah Berger. Both legs were broken and he received a terrible blow on the head. The deceased was in the employment of the railroad and working at the coal chute. It seems that the train whistled for the station but the sound was not heard. The body was taken to the Ohde undertaking parlors where an inquest was held. Meesers H.P. Hansen, Phil Zerwas and H.C. Claussen brought in a verdict that the deceased met his death through the negligence of the railroad.

Mr. Berger was born in Ohio, October 22, 1856 and was married May 18, 1877, to Sarah Anna Hauser who as well as the ten children survive; they are as follows: Charlie Berger of Irwin, Iowa; Mrs. Minnie Bowers, Atlantic, Iowa; Mrs. Mabel Rhinehart, Coon Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Altie Mendenhal, Audubon, Iowa; Walter Berger, Manning, Iowa; Mrs. Lusty Dunnington, Harlan, Iowa; Ruby L. Berger, Oadis Berger, Sadie Berger, and Clyde Berger of Manning, Iowa. Burial took place Monday at Red Line, Iowa, Cemetery, Rev. Farrell of Irwin preaching the sermon.

The deceased was well known here, being of a quiet disposition and a man, who attended strictly to his own business. He was a good workman, a kind and affectionate husband and a loving father.

The members of the bereaved family have asked us to publicly thank all those who so kindly offered assistance in their late bereavement.

The following verses were written by one of the daughters of the deceased:
How sad is the parting with father,
And a vacant place in our home,
But we hear the dear Savior calling.
Beckoning at us to come home.
One by one they are crossing the river.
It may be our turn next, who knows
O let us be ready, dear Brother,
So when God calls we'll be ready to go.
Weep not for father is sleeping,
in yonder bright land so fair,
I can hear my dear Savior whisper,
There'll be no sorrow up here.

According to all of tombstones it should be spelled Burger - there is one Berger on a tombstone.
