MANNING - Funeral rites for Lawrence J. "Si" Nickum, former Manning businessman, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 1967, at the Ohde Funeral Home here, with Masonic ceremonies by Manual Lodge No. 450 A.F. & A.M.

The Rev. Andrew Stewart Morris, minister of the Manning Methodist Church was in charge of services, with Clifford Manning Johnson as soloist and Mrs. Bonita Hagedorn, organist. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers, present or past members of the Manning Fire Department, were Milford Wiese, Chris Schmidt, George Peters, Herbert Hass, Francis J. Zerwas and Edwin Johnson.

A son of Jacob L. and Lucinda Ellen (Hayes) Nickum, he was born February 19, 1894, at Manning. He served in the US. Navy prior to World War I, and was married at Manning to Cecelia Addison on July 14, 1915. He operated a rendering plant here for 30 years, then was in business at Woodland Park, Colorado, for six years. For the past six years, he had spent winters at the Nickum home in Brownsville, Texas.

In failing health for some time, he entered the Manning Hospital the evening of October 7, and died there Sunday evening, October 8.

Mr. Nickum served as Manning Fire Chief for many years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and president of the Winter Tourist Club in Brownsville.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Earl (June) Spicer of Garden Grove, Iowa; Mrs. John (Myna) Loff, Brownsville, Texas; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
