Dave - I was so touched by the interview you did of my parents when they sold our farm. I never knew they did this interview. I don't recall them ever telling me about and I never saw until today. My Dad passed away last week and I so miss him. This was the first time I'd heard his voice in nearly five years. Thanks for doing this - it's been a wonderful discovery for me to make after his passing. Most appreciative of your efforts. Best regards, Dian Tank Schons

Our neighborhood is overrun with European starlings. I've been looking for ideas on how to reduce the ES population here. Came across your ingenious birdhouse traps. We'll have to rig those up next year, maybe in February? The starlings stay here year-round. We see only a few cardinals and blue jays, never any bluebirds or purple martins. Thanks for the advice. We'll have starling pie -- here's a recipe: 12 starlings, plucked and dressed 1 yellow onion, peeled 2 cloves, whole 2 T. flour salt & pepper 1 recipe biscuit dough Simmer the birds, giblets, onion, and cloves in a pan with 2 c. water until the meat comes off the bones. Stir flour into reduced broth in the pan and heat until boiling, stirring constantly. Add salt, pepper, meat, and giblets. Pour into an iron skillet or deep pie pan, cover with rolled out biscuit dough. Bake at 400 F for 10 mins. then lower heat to 350 F and bake for 20 mins. or until crust is nicely brown. Yum.

Dave, our sincerest thanks for the wonderful School History that you and so many Manning volunteers put together for all of us who were fortunate to graduate from Manning Schools. The all school reunion and Kinderfest last weekend just proved that our hometown is there to stay. I admit to a few tears throughout the day, remembering my years in Manning. God Bless you!

My grandparents were Charles and Mimi Hershman. My father Clark Hershman was raised in Manning Iowa. Growing up I would spend my summers in Manning and Denison. I hope to get back there one day, maybe this summer.
