Surprise At The Haus/Barn
Manning Monitor
July 22, 1999
Someone arrived on Dan Peter's doorstep early Monday morning, shocking him and surprising everyone helping with the haus/barn project.
It was a brand-new helper. Stephan Pong, German native, flew out of Germany over the weekend, spending $120 on a taxi from Omaha to Manning, Iowa. He arrived at the Peter's household at about 7 a.m., ready to help the haus/barn project coordinator.
Peters was astonished because no one knew he was coming, except for the Germans already working on the project, although they did not expect him until next week.
He was also amused at the clothing worn by the new helper. Pong was decked out in black corduroy pants and vest, a long-sleeved white shirt, and the chains were attached at his hip to hang the hammer.
Pong works at the Open Air and Field Museum in Kiel, Germany with Dr. Johannsen who was a main artery in this project, keeping the haus/barn dream flowing. Pong said Johannsen is a "happy man," and speaks of the haus/barn in Manning every day.
Pong original plan was to come to the United States to travel with his girlfriend, son, and daughter, but things changed when he heard of the haus/barn. He decided to come early to help, and will be working on the project until August. He said he will then travel with his family, but will return to Manning when they fly back to Germany. Pong will be back in September to help thatch the roof.
