MANNING AUTO SUPPLY
Manning Auto Supply, a Napa Franchise owned and operated by Richard A. Dammann, is located at 305 Main Street in the former Hansen-Pahde building which was purchased by Mr. Dammann in December of 1978 from Mary Brennen. The beginning of the Napa Parts store dates back to 1959, when Frank Smith of Denison opened the business, then known as Smith Motor Parts, in the old Post Office building. In 1968 Dick Boeck, also of Denison, purchased the business under the same name. Ralph Grundmeier of Manning managed the business until May of 1970, when he purchased the business from Boeck and changed the name to Ralph's Motor Supply. The business was then purchased from Grundmeier by Richard Dammann in September of 1978 and now operates under the title of Manning Auto Supply.

HANSENS GROCERY STORE
When we think of old and continuing business we must surely consider the one started in 1881 by George Detlefs Sr. and John Karsten. They started to build in 1881 and on February 15, 1882, they opened the doors to a thriving grocery store business. Ted Hansen purchased Mr. Detlefs' interest and it was called Hansen and Karsten. Ted Hansen was in the business for over 40 years and can certainly be considered one of the pioneer merchants of Manning. Herman Hansen became a partner and it was called Hansen and Hansen. Later another partner was added and it was Hansen & Hansen & Alberts. Pete Hansen was the owner manager for a number of years and his former customers still remember the delightful bird whistles Pete honored us with as he sacked our groceries.

Herman Pahde was the owner-manager of the clothing department during much of this time, making this a most convenient one stop store. Pete went to Des Moines to serve as an Iowa State Senator and the store was sold to Amos Rutz in 1956. The name of the store was changed to The A. and G. Store. Amos had been a clerk in the store for many years so knew the business well. However, he went into another business in 1965 and the store was closed. This was the end of a continuous grocery business for over 83 years. The building, at 305 Main, is now occupied by the Manning Gas Company.
