Sports history

Another section of the future Manning school history book will cover sports. As most of you know Brian Lage has been collecting and researching Manning sports history for many years and has also kept track of current sports records. Detailed sports records from Brian's work will be included in this history book.

Below is an example of what will be included in the history book. It is a split picture of the 1944-45 basketball team followed by Brian's statistics of that season and its players. Starting this winter Jeff Wanninger, Brian and I will be asking for team and individual pictures to go along with each sports season. These pictures will be added to Brian's detailed sports records and provide an excellent way to preserve the history of each team.

Lynn Mork
A very important part of the success of this school history book will be former Manning Alumni members digging out their school photos and information and bringing that information to the Monitor office and/or presenting it to history book committee members. Lynn Mork has been sending/sharing school memorabilia and pictures with me. Below is one of those pictures. It was taken on the old football field along Highway 141. In the background is the old Saunders' Steakhouse and Motel to the north which is the present day location of Don's Carwash.

These players were a part of the 1973 football team. They were number 1 in the Midwest Conference with a 7-0 record. They finished 4th in Class AA state and 5th in Class A Southwest Iowa. They scored 22 points per game to their opponents 10 points. The defense held the opponents to 186 yards per game to Manning's offense gaining 229 yards. Head Coach Larry Miller received the "Coach of the Year" for the Southwest District.

We also want coach, cheerleader, band, instructor, parade/float, and homecoming pictures that are a part of those teams. Mil was an avid photographer and below are several of her homecoming float pictures.

I know many alumni members are reading these articles because they have been coming forward and expressing their interest in sharing their memories and pictures for the history book. Allen Ehlers told me he helped with the grade school construction 1962 and remembered lots of names of people who also worked there. Dennis Grimm shared some pictures of his earth moving equipment work at the site. Ginger Wolfe e-mailed me and said her dad Melvin "Tommy" Wolfe and Roy Schilling did welding work on the grade school. Roy told me that he became a certified welder at that time. Dean Grimm offered information about Ewoldt No. 7 Country School. So as you can see we are off to a good start with people coming forward.
