MHS Bulldogs last homecoming

One of the driving factors behind the Manning school history book project is preserving the era of the Manning Bulldogs. On September 28, 2007, MHS will have its last "Bulldog" homecoming. There will be mixed feelings on that day but if we preserve the happy Bulldog memories in a book we will pass on and preserve that "Bulldog" pride so many of us have.
What better way to pass on those "Bulldog" memories than to put a cute picture like this in the history book. This picture came from Marian (Kasperbauer) Fitzsimmons MHS 1949 and brings back memories of the 1948 Homecoming which shows crown bearers Suzanne Steneker and Don Callen.

Darlys (Vollstedt) Bean MHS 1957 has a wonderful collection of "Bulldog" memories and this next picture shows the FFA float during the 1955 homecoming. "Let's Lick Em" the words say, with candy canes and lollipops displayed on the float.

Darlys also has these next 2 pictures which show the 1956 homecoming royalty and the senior float which received first place.

Back: Marilyn Spieker, Darlys Vollstedt, Darlene Genzen, Karen Rix, Pat Irlbeck; Front: Dixie Baley, Queen Anna Belle Vennink, Dick Loucks
On the float: Diane (Dalgety) Genzen, Betty (Peters) Nobiling, and Elke Bunz playing the harp.

Marilyn (Vennink) Pfannkuch (MHS 1961) has this next picture which shows the 1956 Junior High float titled "Down with Bayard."

Myra (Weems) Luetje MHS 1969 provided this 1968 program cover. Below the program information is the Manning Monitor article about that game.

DOWN SCRANTON, 27 to 0
October 4, 1968 Manning Monitor
The Manning Bulldogs plagued by injuries, downed the Scranton Trojans 27-0 last Friday night for their Homecoming game.

The Bulldogs, missing fullbacks Dale Moeller, quarterback Dennis Rowedder, and guard, Lance Lage, roared past the Trojans mainly through the quality of the offensive line blocking. Curt Struve acted as quarterback for the Bulldogs and led them to their third conference win.

Bob Case scored two touchdowns, one from Scranton's 26 just after Manning had recovered a Trojan fumble. The other touchdown camel on a 4-yard plunge in the second quarter. Scranton also helped the Bulldog's cause when a snap from center went over their punter's head and out of the end zone. Scranton's centering and punting also set up the other two touchdowns. Larry Stangl blocked a punt in the second quarter. Mark Heinicke picked it up and ran in for a touchdown. Bob Case made the PAT. Kenny Sturm also blocked a punt, picked it up and ran to the Scranton 15 before being tackled. From the 12 John Dobler then scored on a sweep to end the scoring. The final was Manning defeating Scranton 27-0.

Donna Schwiesow provided these next 2 pictures. The first picture was taken during the 1984 homecoming dance where Scott Schwiesow was crowned King and danced with Queen Jean Hull. The second picture was taken during the 1991 homecoming and shows King Dan Rauch and Queen Robin (Schwiesow) Halbur. Donna and her husband Victor Schwiesow MHS 1957 are currently working with Judy Joens to transcribe names of teachers and other school employees and school board members from the school record books for the years 1954 and before. We will have these names listed in the school history book.

We have very few homecoming king & queen pictures. We are looking for homecoming royalty, parade, crowning, and candid pictures for this event. We don't have the names of the homecoming queens from 1946 & 1959 or from the years 1939 and before so if you know the name of a queen please let us know. Please dig out your photos and bring them to the Monitor office or contact Dave Kusel by phone (712) 653-3259 or mail to 11723 300St Manning, Iowa 51455-8687 or e-mail mhs@davidkusel.com
