Former Supt. Wm. Baley Dies

William "Bill" Baley, who served as Manning Superintendent of Schools from 1953 to 1963, died October 30, 1988, in Des Moines at the age of 65; born June 27, 1923. He had been in ill health for the past year. He was buried in the Highland Hamilton Memory Gardens in Des Moines. William Baley was raised in Omaha and graduated from Benson High.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and served in the South Pacific until the end of World War II.

He attended college in St. Cloud, Minnesota, graduated and taught school in Minnesota for several years. He moved his family to Omaha and attended Omaha University where he received his Master's degree. He took a teaching position in Shelby, Iowa, and accepted the Manning position as Superintendent in 1953. After serving our school for ten years he resigned to receive his doctor's degree in Administration. After his graduation he accepted an administrative job with the Iowa State Educational Department. He was there until he retired in 1986.

He is survived by his wife Elaine, 6720 Timberline Drive, Des Moines, Iowa 50313; two daughters: Mrs. Steve Summy (Dixie) and Mrs. Jeff Eliott (Barbara) both of Colorado; and one son, Reb Baley of Moscow, Idaho.

Dr. William M. Haley, 65, of 6720 N.W. Timberline Drive died of complications of diabetes and a liver ailment Sunday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hamiltons near Highland Memory Gardens Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, Des Moines.

Dr. Haley was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and lived in Des Moines for 23 years. He was a school administrator in Shelby and Manning before coming to Des Moines and retired in 1986 as associate state superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction.

He had been a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Masonic Lodge and was a Marine Corps Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; a son, Reb of Troy, Idaho; two daughters, Dixie Summy of Pershall, Colorado; and Barbara Elliott of Bond, Colorado; a sister, Annabelle Haley of San Carlos, California; and a grandchild.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Boline-Manfredi Post of VFW, the American Diabetes Association or Izaak Walton League.
