Captolia Helen (Hinrichs) Greteman
1903 - 1986

A memorial service for Captolia Helen Hinrichs Greteman was held Monday, July 14, 1986 at 2 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
David and Magaretjean Weltha, niece of Mrs. Greteman, and their son, Craig offered the service. Jim Stock of Lake View provided the organ music. Mrs. Greteman had donated her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

Captolia, the sixth child of Hans and Anna Winkelmann Hinrichs was born March 11, 1903 in Manning, Iowa. She graduated from Manning High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Omaha.

In 1927 she married Ed Greteman who died in 1935. Mrs. Greteman taught in rural schools for 25 years. In 1940 with the cooperation of KMA radio station, she organized the first statewide radio graduation ceremony for the 11,000 rural graduates. The ceremony was expanded in 1942.
In 1941 she was elected president of Southwest Iowa Teachers Association and was a member at large of the Executive Committee of the Iowa State Education Association. She was then elected president of ISEA, the first rural teacher to hold that position. During World War II in 1943, she was County Chairman of the Women's Division of the War Finance Commission when the county started the Pin Money Drive which became a nationwide program. The county school program, with a goal of two Jeeps or $1,800, went over the top 20 times and sold $35,000 in bonds during a two-week period. She served as State Executive Secretary of the Women's Division and visited every county in the state during the organizational period.

She served as Carroll County Treasurer in 1944.

She worked with SAC in Seattle, checking flights to Alaska.

She planned and helped make arrangements for the summer tours conducted for the Travel Clubs of Templeton school. She chaperoned many of the trips.
Cap traveled widely, to Mexico, Alaska, Europe, the Orient, Hawaii, the Caribbean and South America. She gave many programs about her experiences.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed; by four sisters: Emma, Amanda, Edith, and Margaret; and a brother Hans J. Hinrichs.

Cap is survived by four nieces: Elva Arndt, Bellevue, Nebraska; Margaret Dean, Fort Worth, Texas; Joyce Rushenberg, Fort Worth, Texas; and Margaretjean Weltha, Ames.
