Memories of Washington #5

November 19, 2003

The Meister Boys were brothers of Marie Meister Gawley.
Marie Graduated with the Class of 1944. Her family left the area for Laurens, Iowa. Purchased a farm there.

Earl Singsank married Jean Stuhr. She taught country school along with Rose Grau.
Margaret Singsank married Russell Popp, MHS Class of 1943.

Washington #5 was Center School. Primary and General Elections were held there.
Christmas Programs. There was a furnace and indoor toilets.

The first teacher I had was Dorothy Hoogestrat Highstreet. She married Vernon Anthony.
A miss Andersen and Ila Pierce from Coon Rapids.
A.L. Rohr, Ruth Kuhn and Arlene Highstreet.
Arlene was my last teacher in 7th and 8th Grades.

Roger & Lyle Eich and Leonard Frahm attended Washington #5 when we came out to the farm in 1936.

Herbert Hinze (Orville's dad) was the Secretary of the Township and as a result he wrote teacher's checks. Each School Director wrote a voucher for each month taught.

Elaine Roggish taught 2 miles farther north of our school.

Selma Ross taught 2 miles south of our school.

Mildred Kaspersen taught in the northeast corner of Township. She drove a Model A Ford Coupe and was older than her peers. She was well educated. Even as a child I recognized this.
She usually arrived with a number of vouchers. She taught at the same school for many years.

Somewhere I have a snap shot of the School that my Mother Margaret Struve attended east of Manning. The Struve farm is presently owned by Jack and Wava Lorenzen. Mom attended school with the Graus --- Mrs. Laura Alwill, Meyers --- Henry and Alfred (Smokey).

Rose Kuhl Lamp taught this school. She was sister of Emil, Bob, Pete and Bonita Kuhl.

Rose was a good teacher, strict and could handle those boys -- I quote my mother.
Mom was born in 1900.
